Make It A Good Hair Day

sorry, I can’t hear you over the volume of my hair

This post is in partnership with IGK however all opinions and images are mine of course, as always.

Do you ever notice that your hair just holds style better when it’s a bit dirty with a side of grungy? I swear if I wash my hair and then attempt to zhuzh it … it just doesn’t happen for me. But if it’s a bit dirty it holds curl better, volume is vavavoomin’, and I can manipulate it into submission ha!

I want you to know that it makes me happy to hear that you think my hair is perfect, it’s actually not but thank you! So I want to share with you what my typical hair styling routine looks like. We teach bootcamps on Zoom at least three times a week so the grunge effect is in full force on most days. On days that I wash it and it’s too clean I will hit it with some IGK First Class Charcoal Detox dry shampoo to dirty it up a bit today and give it some texture. Because the dry shampoo cools and cleanses, it’s actually perfect for days that I don’t wash my hair, and after today’s workout it definitely needed some detoxifying.

IGK just released this dry shampoo and their First Class shampoo and conditioner among others. Besides the scent being clean and light, this trifecta of products have been my hair care routine go-to for the last 5 weeks. Paraben and mineral oil free, they cleanse without stripping and condition without weighing your locks down. Here’s a lil video of me showing you how I apply the dry shampoo (and somehow manage to get it all over myself) and style my hair. You can’t take me anywhere I tell ya.

I hope this easy 5 minute tutorial helps move your hair styling routine right along. If you create this tousled beach wave look, TAG me on Instagram. If you use the code JESS20 at IGK, you’ll get 20% off your order <3

Happy hump day to you and cheers to some va-va-voomin’ hair! The bigger the better.

When To Save And When To Splurge

it takes me longer to take off my jewelry than it does my clothes

Truest statement ever made. I mean… with the clasps, the one handed maneuvering, trying not to tangle my hair in my necklaces- it’s all so intricate.

I think I inherited my love of all things sparkly from my mama. When you’re little, you think YOUR mama is THE most beautiful woman in all the world and mine wasn’t only beautiful, she was blingy! She had long straight hair past her bum, a gold basket crown on her lateral incisor (she was flossin’ long before gold teeth was a thing!), and wore every piece of jewelry she owned. Even if she was just dropping us off at school, she’d be dressed up, lashes curled and lipstick on. She wore necklace stacks, bracelets that you can only get in Saipan, and 7-8 rings that I’d play with if she was next to me.

I just love that jewelry is fancy and dainty, I love that it dresses up any outfit and I love that if it’s passed down from a family member that it carries along a story. I want to share with you today some of my favorite pieces and when I think it’s time to save and when it’s time to splurge.

When it comes to my jewelry, I do all of the S’s in them… sleep, shower, swim, sweat… all of ’em. So I take into consideration tarnishing and the quality of metal- gold filled versus gold plated, it all makes a difference to me.

Tiffany & Co- one of my favorite pieces (in the upper right hand corner of the first photo), this gorgeous circle pendant necklace is pure quality and was a gift from one of my closest girlfriends as a MOH gift. It’s rose gold, dainty, classic and perfect for stacking with my other necklaces. I hardly ever take this off. This is an investment piece for sure, for yourself or anyone else
Ferkos Fine Jewelry– 14 Karat Gold, diamonds and made to order, Ferkos also has ready to ship pieces. You don’t have to worry about their jewelry turning your skin green or tarnishing on your wrists because they’re gold. Even though they feel ultra dainty they’re also very durable. I have their diamond cut chain and rope chain and I love them, they’re timeless
Belladaar- jewelry that is gold filled, most of my bracelet stack is from Belladaar. I swim, sweat, shower in them and they’ve never broken or tarnished on me. I love gifting from this brand because the price points are so reasonable and their jewelry retain their value
Oma The Label– gold plated, this is one of the only brands I’ve purchased from that don’t tarnish after living your life in them. You’ve also probably noticed that most of these brands are female founded *hail hands
Ana Luisa– 14k gold plated, their huggie hoops and rings give me life. A lot of my earrings are from Ana Luisa and even though I spray my hair with 19 pounds of hairspray, their pieces stand the test of time
Gorjana– something for everyone, price points matter. 18k gold plated and silver plated brass pieces, I have their Parker and herringbone collections that I wear almost every day. I don’t bring these pieces into the pool but they’re definitely pieces to live in

See, there’s a time to save and there’s a time to splurge. For me it comes down to quality, jewelry I can invest in, live in and pieces to pass down. I’m always on the lookout for jewelry that is timeless, classic and stackable. I’ve purchased a few pieces from other companies that are gold plated vs filled and to be honest, a lot of them tarnish easily, or the look of them isn’t quality at all. I love these brands and I wouldn’t have included them if I didn’t wear them often to speak about them honestly.

I’d love to know if there are other jewelers you love and support? Do you wear jewelry or are you more simplistic in your style? Share with me <3

Versatile Pieces You Won’t Need to Replace

The famous fashion designer and creative director Karl Lagerfeld once said that “trendy is the last stage before tacky.” Fashion trends come and go, with some being more ostentatious than others. While you may be tempted to follow suit–pun intended–there’s something about certain wardrobe staples that will never go out of style. Investing in classic, versatile wardrobe pieces means having timeless items that you will always find yourself going back to, like discussed in an updated post on ‘Redefining Wardrobe Basics With Corrine’.

Here are four versatile pieces you won’t need to replace:

Pumps with a Classic Silhouette

The perfect pair of pumps can add a level of sophistication to an outfit. Chunky heels, platforms, and strappy sandals have made their ascent and descent repeatedly, but classic silhouettes that feature closed toes and skinny heels are often the benchmark for elegance. Steve Madden’s Vala range comes in 23 different colors, from the sleek, stylish black patent to a pastel-colored snakeskin. You can choose a pair (or more) to complement your existing wardrobe.

Denim Jacket

Denim pieces exude the tenets of both form and function. The best part is, denim doesn’t just mean denim blue anymore. Woman Within offers a range of denim jackets that come in different colors and designs, such as lavender, navy with white dots, and pastel blue with a floral pattern. Choosing a fun, colorful denim jacket means being able to wear it as both a statement piece and as something functional.

Black Pants

Snug-fitting pants need not be uncomfortable as there are many options that are both comfortable and flattering for all body types. They can transition seamlessly from the office to a night out. They can also be dressed up or down with layers of necklaces or a vintage graphic tee, respectively. Mango has several options for versatile black pants that will look good on every body type, and help you accentuate the parts you want to highlight–whether that be lengthening your legs or contouring your hips.

White T-Shirt

Similar to black pants, white t-shirts can be dressed up and down as one of the most basic items of clothing. Throwing on a white t-shirt is an effortless look and the more you wear it, the better it looks. The Strategist recently updated their feature on the best white t-shirts for your perusal and consideration. From V-necks, to round necks, to scoop necks––you’re bound to find the fit that works best on you that you will get the most mileage out of.

These versatile pieces can be worn any way you wish and they can even be worn all together, proving just how flexible they are. The next time you’re stumped on what to wear, pull out one of these pieces as they are sure to look good no matter how you choose to style them. Sometimes staying true to classics is one of the best ways to look polished and put-together.

So tell me, which versatile statement pieces will you be adding to your wardrobe this season?

My Daily Uniform

I grew up on Army bases my whole life. We didn’t have to wear uniforms but we did have a lot of rules to follow. Rules like; you can’t wear shorts that come higher than your finger tips when your arms are by your side, no bare midriffs, no open-toe shoes, no hair color … yup, no hair color. Like wut? I’m pretty sure these rules still apply today. I feel like my every day personal style is a direct rebellion to those rules.

I love a good cropped top, slides, and quality jeans… just add in a good body suit and blazer and that is my daily uniform. I’ll alternate between the two but if we’re talking daily go-to, that’s it! I think we all have a standard go to, a fall back uniform that we put together and here’s an example of mine.

Cropped tee

Ray Ban’s

Levi’s high waisted wedgie jeans

Gucci belt

Slides

Gold chunky hoops

Necklace stack

Levi’s denim jacket

Simple, comfortable, stylish, cute, and versatile, that’s what I reach for… and 90’s everything!

What’s your go to? The 90’s revival is back and I may be late to this trend but I never took it out of rotation <3

Easy Tousled Beach Waves

Today’s video is inspired by one of your most frequently asked questions… my hair. How I curl it, how long it takes, and what products I use. Well my darling, today I give you all the answers <3

I promise this takes no time at all once you’ve perfected your own style and curl type. I do have a few tips that will help create that beachy, relaxed, messy hair don’t care vibe, regardless if you’re a pro with that curling iron or not.

  • depending on the length of your hair you want to use a curling iron with a barrel big enough (or small enough) to create loose waves and not those tight poodle-like curls. Unless that’s the look you’re going for
  • product in your hair to help with the style is always a plus! Some people don’t need product at all.. I need a salt spray, a texturizing spray, and a hairspray 😉
  • curl away from your face. For at least the sections that frame your face and then the other sections you can alternate between directions of the curl to create an even more natural look
  • be sure to cover the entire barrel with your hair. You can ensure this by wrapping your hair around every part of real estate on the curling iron instead of double wrapping (stacking) your hair around hair that’s already on the barrel. Make sense?
  • I like to curl sections of hair that are about one inch wide but depending on the thickness of your hair you may need to use smaller or larger sections and splitting my hair down the center just makes for a bouncier side part once it’s all curled
  • I don’t leave my hair on the curling iron for too long, once I’ve picked up another section of hair I release the hair from the barrel and move on. This ensures a nice wave and not a tight curl
  • I pull the curling iron downwards, almost giving it a lil tug at the end as you see in the video. This technique will reduce bounce in the curl but not in a bad way. More in a relaxed wave kind of way and less of a spiral curl
  • this is a big one- leave the ends out. This will help your curls look more like messy, imperfect waves and less uniform. I leave about an inch of hair out from the barrel
  • sectioning your hair out can be helpful but as you’ll see in the video I just eye ball it. If you miss a piece you can go back over it before you spray it but to save on time I don’t usually pin my hair into sections
  • the texturizing spray I use towards the center of my hair and at the roots, kind of scrunching the ends with my fingertips to frizz them out a bit and give them more volume. And more of that distressed look

Products I used:

Hot Tools Curling Iron

IGK Beach Club Texture Spray

Dry Bar Sea Salt Spray

Davines Hair Spray

Layering, Stacking, And Mixing Metals

Ever since I can remember, my mom has been the most beautiful woman in the world. Always smelling lovely, always looking her best, and always wearing every (clap) single (clap) piece of jewelry she owned. She was my very own Mr. T! She inspired me today with this post- all about layering, stacking, and mixing metals.

I love layering my necklaces, stacking my rings, and mixing different metals – rose gold pieces with gold are my favorite to do. So I wanted to share with you my favorite ways to layer and stack, along with my favorite places to shop for all these dainty beauties.

Madewell – I love their earrings and necklaces (as seen here) and all their leather goods

Gorjana– one of my go-to shops for layering and dainty pieces especially rings and bracelets as seen here

five and two– another one of my faves for layering, especially necklaces as seen here

Do you like this dainty style of jewelry? I’m always on the prowl for great accessory places to shop, so if you love any in particular let us know so we can all check them out <3
