10 Beautiful Cities to Visit in the U.S.

With the current pandemic, it will be a long time before we can go back to traveling internationally. This is a great opportunity to concentrate on our country, as there is so much to see here in the United States.

Here are 10 beautiful cities to visit in the U.S.:

1. Chicago

Chicago has a steadily growing population and is one of the future megacities of the world, expected to become one by 2030.  It is the third most populous city in the United States, but with its location on Lake Michigan it has a mix of city and also gorgeous nature views. A famous site to see here is “The Bean” located at Millennium Park.

2. Philadelphia

Philadelphia is the largest city of Pennsylvania that makes it on many people’s East Coast travel itineraries. Most notably, it is home to a standout UNESCO World Heritage Site, Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence was signed that is worth a visit.

3. Portland

Portland, Maine is a popular destination for summer and autumn, as it gives that New England vibe with an extra hint of quirky elegance.

4. Boston

Boston is a characteristic city that has a split ‘old world’ and ‘new world’ feel to it. It is often referred to as the city with two souls, historic and modern, as well as being the ‘Athens of America’. You can walk the Freedom Trail here, as well as visit numerous museums, the Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera, the Symphony Orchestra and more.

5. San Francisco

San Francisco is a city full of character. Often referred to as a hippie town, San Francisco is the hilly city located right on the Bay of San Francisco with a lot to see, do and experience. You can visit the beaches, head to museums, explore Golden Gate Park, see a show at the Fillmore, and explore the side streets with so much character.

6. Charleston

Charleston is a coastal city full of character. It has an old-world aesthetic, with gorgeous golf resorts, art galleries, and architecture that is unique to Charleston.

7. Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach is a coastal city located where the Atlantic Ocean meets Chesapeake Bay. There is a boardwalk, gorgeous oceanfront, and a blossoming culinary scene.

8. Honolulu

Honolulu, Hawaii is a gorgeous beach town on a volcanic island with a ton of culture, making it an absolute must see. The food scene here is booming, the sunsets are incredible, and the city continues to draw visitors consistently every year. A trip here makes it seem like you are traveling to another country and is a destination to check off the bucket list for everyone living in the United States.

9. Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City, Utah is a city to visit if you love dining, nightlife, performing arts, and especially winter sports. Popular ski resorts near the city are Brighton, Snowbird, Alta and Solitude, which could make for the perfect winter holiday this year.

10. Columbus

Columbus, Indiana is a popular spot to visit for those who love architecture. The Exhibit Columbus show shows modern architecture, and it has helped draw a number of visitors over the years.

The United States is rich in beautiful cities, and while international travel is off the table, we are reminded of how many gorgeous places there are to visit in our own country.

Local Discoveries – The Who, What, Where #DiscoverTorrance

Shopping, adventures, and foods oh my!

As you saw from my last article, I visited the neighboring city of Torrance last month and I’m so happy to share my discoveries with you. Where we shopped, our explorations, local eats … all the things! We stayed at the Best Western Plus Avita Suites and they provide a complimentary breakfast buffet so we only had to find lunches and dinners … and saucy sips … oh and desserts 😉 There’s so many options and I got so many of your recommendations from Instagram, thank goodness discovertorrance.com exists which helped me narrow down all my choices! Pssst and thank YOU for your recs <3

So day one was all about settling into our suite and enjoying dinner at our hotel, so the next morning after we enjoyed the buffet we visited the Farmer’s Market for some lunch and local goods.

It was such a beautiful day in Torrance that it was easy to walk around for three hours before I decided I wanted a mid-day pick me up. We headed to the best boba in town… 7 leaves cafe

That would be my macarons and cafe over there chillin’ next to the Moana tree haha. Sooo good, please go there and get the Taro milk tea boba! The Depot was high on your recommendation list as it was on the discovertorrance.com site so that’s exactly what we did for dinner and let me tell ya… I’m a martini kinda lady and their martini’s cannot be matched! So perfectly paired with a filet and mashed potatoes dinner. Umm and that would be pistachio butter you see next to that fresh baked bread *drool*

P.S. that’s the Chef! Of course I asked to take a photo with him, it was one of the best meals evaaaar! And what better way to wrap up day one than a night cap?! We walked over to a neighboring hotel bar and enjoyed one more saucy sip… can you guess what I got? And of course- a bar pretzel is the best choice duh.

Perfection ah. With time in the books I was already fully enjoying my time in this city. Day two began the same as the previous morning but we switched up routine by having some Hawaiian lunch for the first time. I learned that Hawaiian food and Chamorro food (it me!) are very similar! Think spam and rice haha This was The Loft in Torrance and they did not disappoint.

Musubi and Hawaiian fried chicken for the win! Since I’m the type of person who plots my next food venture WHILE still having the current meal (ha!) I decided we’d go to Brio for dinner AND dessert and enjoy some home made donuts… they had me at donuts let’s be real.

We wrapped up the day by finishing our holiday shopping at Del Amo Fashion Center, which by the way is just a hop and a skip away from our hotel… winning! It was such a perk considering I shopped ’til I dropped.

Why yes, I did purchase this camo cropped pull-over *hail hands* I ended up completing all of my holiday shopping AND shopped for myself so… treat yo self. Day two was a smashing success and when I tell you I slept like a baby, trust.

Before leaving on our final day in Torrance, I ran one last time at our hotel gym, enjoyed a homemade waffle and took time with every bite, and just had to make one last stop before checking out of my staycation dream. Enter Strand Brewing for some FUNS!

Ending my staycation in Torrance could not have been any more fun than enjoying a flight of local beers, playing some games, and sports!

I had the best time and feel so lucky to have partnered with such a welcoming and hospitable community to showcase some of the best places in Torrance to eat, visit, explore, and shop <3 I hope you get a chance to visit our new home away from home and I’ll link you to all the places that helped make our stay so memorable and easy to navigate!

Have you added ‘more adventure’ to your New Year goals yet? Let’s do this!

Discovering Torrance – Best Western Plus Avita Suites- Cheers to venturing more in 2020!

It’s a new decade darlings, can you believe it?! Welcome to 2020… we’re in it and we’re also just coming off of a two week break where we didn’t know what day it was, what time it was, and if we were ever going to change out of footed pj’s. So now that we’re back into the full swing of things I want to share a few of my personal goals with you. I think it’s so wonderful when we can get real with each other and spark creativity in one another. I read a great quote the other day that had so many meanings to me, “one year closes so another can open”.

So good right? So one of my goals this year is to travel more, to hit reset on my mind and my heart when I need it, and to not feel guilty about it. Even if it’s just jumping in my car and visiting a neighboring city, I’ve got to do it in the name of adventure. I was inspired to take more time to explore my own city when Discover Torrance reached out to me for a staycation. ‘Ummm yes please’, is what I think I responded with.

The idea of a staycation always encourages me to relax without worrying about taking a flight out or being too far away from family and financial responsibilities. So I packed my bags and headed to the Best Western Plus Avita Suites in Torrance. Sweet Suites, it’s an award-winning-all-suite boutique hotel and was so close to everything I wanted to do during my stay I couldn’t wait to get there. So with my itinerary in hand I checked into my suite and found it very difficult to peel myself from the cozy bed to hit the town on our night one haha.

My next article will share in detail all of my recommendations for where to go, what to do, things to eat, best desserts to find, and local favorites in Torrance. Today I want to share my experience at this beautiful hotel and share that you can book with them here

I wouldn’t usually describe lobbies as inviting and beautiful but let me tell you, this lobby was inviting, comfortable, and beautiful. I actually blurted out at the front desk, “how pretty is this?! I have to take some photos before I check in”.

It was bright and festive, the staff was so welcoming… and so was this cushy bed! Every room is a suite so they each have a seating area, office area, and kitchenette. Here’s a fun walk through…more like dance through of my room! Imagine Mariah Carey’s voice singing as I dance you about the suite.

Once I settled in and unpacked… P.S. am I the only one who get SO excited about hotels that I have to unpack all of my belongings before doing anything else? AKA I hang my clothes in the closet, utilize the robe, put my keys in the safe, and place all of my toiletries out ha! I’m saving the rest of my excitement to share all of the things we did, the foods we ate, the drinks we drank, the desserts we hunted, ALL the things that we took in during our time in Torrance.

For today you get to hear me dish all about these digs and the hospitality and generosity we were shown while on our staycation at the Best Western Plus Avita Suites in Torrance. Can we just talk about how much joy complimentary breakfasts bring us all? Haha talk about breakfast, this was a full blown buffet with options like home-made waffles, a yogurt and bagel station, fresh fruit, and every cereal and topping you can imagine.

I indulged and had a little bit of everything Cafe Avita had to offer, here’s a peek above. After all that yummy food I had to get some cardio in and build energy for the day’s events to eat our way through the town! It’s so nice when the place you’re staying at has a gym, it encourages you to stick with your goals, and it completely helps that they have weights and not just a standard treadmill…yayy options!

It was truly so relaxing to stay at this destination for two nights and made coming back after a fun filled day of adventures and foodie times just all the more spectacular. I do hope you get a chance to visit our home away from home, Torrance which is just a town over from us. The staff, the amenities, the views, the food, all of it … I’m so grateful to have been able to relax for a few days before heading back to reality of the grind and hustle.

This was just before the holidays and could not have come at a more necessary time. Please scroll back through and enjoy the images, I hope you loved my dancing walk through of our suite, and come back on Monday for my complete guide to Torrance <3

Staycations… you ever been on one? What is a destination close to home that you’ve been dreaming of visiting? I hope Los Angeles is on your list and I hope you check out Torrance and where I stayed while you’re here!

I’m including links for you here because that’s love haha xx

TECHNOLOGY AND STORY TELLING

I launched my brand back in 2009 and have developed an affinity of sharing my message through story telling. For me, it includes a side of comedy, always.

Being a creative in new media today means being able to do it all. To wear all the hats. Technology has been an especially vital tool in growing and conducting my business .. after all, it is entirely based online. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to engage with you all, across the globe, like we are now, time and space not stopping us! *says this while holding radio above head outside your window*

Celebrating technology and humanity came together this weekend when I was invited out to the Santa Monica Pier for the AT&T and TOMS #CelebrateGood event. To commemorate a decade of partnership between the two companies, I got to step inside a huge shoebox, and this is what they shared with us.

AT&T has helped TOMS grow their business since they began, 10 years ago, by powering their network and spreading their mission of one for one giving. Now, AT&T is giving fans a virtual reality experience that takes you on, “A Walk In Their Shoes.” I got to enjoy this incredible advance in technology that transported me to Colombia on an actual giving trip!

It’s pretty unbelievable how real it felt to be there along the giving trip. Being able to see the activities the kids were doing, and to look up, down, and around at everything they were seeing was unreal! I’m glad I was sitting down!

I was immersed in experiences, after stepping aside from the VR station, I learned about the AT&T and TOMS partnership through this interactive 10 year timeline. Talk about being in awe of technology, I was using my feet to scroll through the years!

P7730301

Above is Blake Mycoskie, the Founder and Chief Shoe Giver of the company, who was on site walking around each station explaining the impact technology has had in sharing his company’s mission with the world.

I’m so happy to have shared this moment with you all, activating a shoe give, and being a part of this momentous occasion where technology and philanthropy came together. Fun fact, when you purchase a pair of TOMS, an additional pair is given to a child in need and the type of shoe gifted to them is dependent on where in the country they live!

I hope this inspires you to inspire and to view the 360 video and more, just click HERE for your VR tour!

If you could use your voice to spread a message, what would you say? We’re listening <33

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! – MY CAMERA SET UP

I like to do things nice and easy *said in the voice of Tina Turner* So when it comes to recording videos for my channel or taking photos for my blog, I TRY to stick to one piece of equipment because, convenience. However, in true form- I also really love having options! So this past year it’s really been dependent upon the type of content I’m creating and the type of weather conditions … can we say wahoo for an adventure series?! My ONE piece of camera equipment has turned into TOP THREE. I thought today I’d share with you my recent camera set up wheeee!

First up is my handy dandy vlogging camera. If you watch my video blogs and wonder how I get so much of the background in one shot, it’s this lil guy! I’m no camera expert but I know what works for me and what I do, and these are my tried and tested suggestions. If you’re just starting out, this is for you!

Price: $ Features: Auto focus, auto lighting, auto sound, auto is my new favorite word. Optional modes; low light, indoor, outdoor, sports. Perks: This is a great starter camera and for its capabilities it’s on the lower end in terms of price points. It also takes stills, so you can do video and picture, it has an adjustable touch screen, fits in the palm of your hand, and it’s tripod compatible. I know, you’re in love I am too!
My sketch comedy and more produced videos are shot on our Sony RX100 which is our most recent purchase. I was a little intimidated when we got it tbh! I got spoiled with my Vixia which does auto-everything for me. Having to learn how to adjust exposure and focus settings was like learning a foreign language. It was worth it though, image freedom to capture beautiful landscapes and keep its quality is everything! Price: $$ Perks: This camera is a beast. It can record in slow motion and 4 k- so you can crop and zoom in on your images and it’s still ultra crisp! It’s also pocket sized so you aren’t lugging around this huge contraption! You can see some of that in action with videos we’ve done here!

Bustin’ out the big guns here, we have our GH4! When I saw we, I mean Joe! There really isn’t comparing the GH4 to the other cameras we have, it’s in its own realm. The videos we’ve done with this camera are more cinematic looking, and in reference to quality, Joe shot some of his film with it. I really like how it feels like a heavy duty camera (I mean, it is) but it’s also user friendly for someone less experienced with DSLRs like yours truly. A lot of my travel series for the Parks was completed using this camera, and I can actually switch out the lenses and feel like I know what I’m doing! Full disclosure, Joe is sitting behind me making sure I give you all the right information on these because he’s the expert! I just bat my lashes and say, “can you light me, and is the sound on, oh oh and how’s the memory on the card?!”

On the day to day I lean more towards the Vixia and the Sony because they require less set up and I can whip them out in moments of quick capture! Now on to lighting! This is HUGE! My set up at home requires day light and a window! But since I’ve been doing more beauty and lifestyle videos I decided I needed to up my game so that my up close shots were bright and clear.

1) My ring light is perfect for this, it’s bright and gives off a fluorescent glow, yes magic! The light is concentrated on my face giving it a halo effect and you’ll notice that most beauty videos on YouTube feature a ring light of sorts. This one is great because it’s adjustable so you can be sitting on your bed or vanity, or stand up and film. It also has a dimmer on it so you can go all in on the brightness or lessen the intensity. If you’re looking for a more fancier approach, here’s another option and it features a smartphone mount. P.S. Tripod not included so you’ll want to pick one up and this one is inexpensive and gets the job done.
2) Flo lights are a wonderful addition to your lighting kit, I use 1-2 depending on the lighting in the room. There is usually one sitting off to the side that acts as a hair highlight and backlight. You kind of want to create a triangle of lights around you so that there are minimal shadows cast and you’re nice and bright. I lean more towards daylight lighting vs tungsten, because I like to mimic the natural light coming through my home. Again, if you’re feeling fancy, here is another option for you!
3) My travel gear is different from my home gear because at home I have endless storage space. When we’re on location and we’re traveling around I try to pack as light as possible. This small light is ideal for travel because it’s about the size of your palm and fits snug around your phone or laptop. It radiates a hefty glow for its compact size and is reasonable in price. My monkey tripod peaks perfection in moments that I need an extra hand or am forced to wrap it around a vacuum handle to imitate a tall tripod! And it works!

I’ve really enjoyed learning about equipment and how to use each to better my business and I hope this helps you set up for your next session! There are so many options out there that it can be a bit daunting, I’m lucky to have Joe steer me in the right direction so take it from me, these are definitely investments.

Have you worked with any of this equipment and what is your most coveted? Any options out there that I should try? I love trying new things and reporting back my experiences so share your suggestions with me.

Things To Do In Redondo Beach – Our Staycation

This stud muffin puffin and I celebrated our two year anniversary this past weekend <3 For our actual anniversary he was in Croatia so we to spend time together when he got back we headed to the beach!

My brother in law travels each summer and is awesome to open his home to us every year, so off to Redondo Beach we went. Since this is our second year spending a few weekends at one of our favorite places, I wanted to share with you our favorite things to do in Redondo Beach. This isn’t your typical, “go to the beach, walk the pier, find a park, sit at the library, grab a drink, have a some food…”… duh! lol

Yes do all of those things! Walk the pier, enjoy all of the shops, restaurants, and pubs. Rent some bikes, explore all the surrounding beaches, hop on a paddle board, and shop til ya drop! But besides the usual beachin’ stuff, here’s what we especially love about our time in Redondo Beach.

Hit up a local spot! The best Thai food can be found at Siam I Am, a small local restaurant that we love! We walk there every time and when I say small, I mean tiny but mighty. It probably only has 4 tables on the inside but it’s got the most authentic recipes, the most welcoming staff, and the yummiest food! Psst and super reasonably priced.

Must haves! Don’t leave without Thai Tea from Yum Thai Bistro! It’s creamy, it’s sweet, it’s the best! You can grab dessert next door too at Handel’s! It’s homemade yogurt and ice cream and one of the best in town

Pick an afternoon to shop around and cheers at all the places you pass because tipsy shopping is FUNS haha

Pack a picnic! There’s so many walkable spots around the Redondo Beach pier to grab a bite but we love to pack our our picnic (ahem I bought a picnic basket specifically for this reason). We pack snacks, wine, more snacks, and of course SPF. My go to is to pack champs but it’s pretty loud to do

Thennn walk the pier, enjoy all the local shops (there’s vintage shopping around too!), soak up the sun, and relax <3

What we love most is being able to walk to the beach from my brother-in-law’s place, picking fresh produce from his garden, cooking meals together, enjoying sake on the patio…just being outside and being together. Taking some time to be still, connect, and get drunk! haha did I mention that tipsy shopping is super funs?

Will you be hitting up the beach this summer? Or are you a pool type of person? Have you visited Redondo Beach?

Palm Springs – Camping At The Ace Hotel

You know, the thing I loved most about camping as a child was that my siblings and I had no curfew. We were allowed to stay up as late as we wanted to, we didn’t have to take showers before bed, and we were allowed to indulge in as many smores as we wanted! Of course, when you’re camping, 8pm feels like 3am, so going to sleep when the sun went down was easy … well played parentals. Well played.

I recently took a work trip to Palm Springs and we stayed at the Ace Hotel, a hotel I’d only visited once before, for breakfast. You instantly get these vibes of chic vintage meets boho camping. There were these sort of vinyl curtains that you tie together at night and a wall of this huge mosquito netting that separated my room from the sitting area. But think chic mosquito netting, not like regular weird mosquito netting. Can you imagine it yet or are you just picturing weird netting?

So with staple midcentury modern pieces sprinkled throughout, and a very specific decor unique to the desert, I wanted to share what my suite looked like and some things that made the stay memorable for me.

When I walked into the suite there was music coming from the record player (a record player, hello cutie!) and a welcoming treat was left by the entrance. I loved most the personal touches of this camping theme (it may not even be a camping theme they were going for but that’s what it felt like to me) like a walking stick and a survival guide should you decide to explore around using your walking stick. Even the doors leading to my outdoor patio were being cute with a sign that read, “keep your heart unlocked, but know these doors lock automatically”.

I’d assumed there would be a full length mirror for selfies in my room when I packed for the trip … ps anyone else think of these things when packing? No? Just me? Mkay thanks. However, no full length mirror could be found so I got thrifty and created my own tripod so that I could get my OOTD’s for the week, in this rustic setting. See below for the kind of images my shoe box situation took of me.

If I’m being honest, the pool is nothing to write home about but the fact that you can make smores on your patio, stay up past your bedtime, and shower at your leisure are totally worth writing about.

So when’s the last time you went camping? Have you been to Palm Springs before? Are there other properties I should check out? Joe and I have our anniversary coming up and we’re really trying to plan a trip again this year!

My Mother’s Day

When Joe and Corrine asked me what I wanted to do for Mother’s Day I told them I wanted to just chill at home and do whatever they wanted to do. I don’t know why I do this thing, but whenever it’s supposed to be a day about me (i.e. birthdays and holidays) I freeze up and want to do whatever everyone else wants to do. I love attention, don’t get me wrong … it’s the decision making part that I don’t love!

So instead of staying home and working for the day like I’d suggested *eye roll, umm haalllooo we do this every day*, they whisked me away on a lil road trip to Ventura where we hit the beach, had some yummy brunch, walked around town, and made new memories together <3

Corrine will forever be my baby. We hold hands, she sits on my lap, and she lets me snuggle her in public. Joe loves our bond and gives us our space and then joins in on the love fest for family hugs <3

I hope all mamas feel loved and celebrated. Those like me who get to hold their babies, those with angel babies, those who have strained relationships, those who long to be mamas, those who’ve lost their mama, pet mamas … you’re all so special.

How did you spend your day yesterday? Happy Mother’s Day from me to you

Best Cyber Monday Deals

Two things signal the holiday season the day after Thanksgiving and each make me equally excited. One, the tree goes up! It’s finally acceptable to put the Christmas tree up, hang all the lights, and not get the side eye from your neighbors. And two, Black Friday and Cyber Monday have all of our attention from waiting on line at 3am, to sifting through all the deals that our feeds get flooded with weeks leading up to Thanksgiving.

It can all be a bit overwhelming so I sifted through the sites to bring you my personal guide to shopping this year’s best deals. In 5 categories, 1 pick from each (okay maybe 2), I figure you can start here and work your way up and out … from under all the shopping bags and wrapping paper. Good luck!

Makeup/ beauty: SEPHORA

This was a hard one for me since all the beauty brands are running some kind of special, so I chose Sephora as an ultimate one stop shopping site, and then hand picked Glossier’s Body Hero wash and lotion as a bonus since 1) it’ll be on sale and 2) double the fun with this duo. If you didn’t know about this product before I think you’re going to be pleasantly surprised to find out that the body lotion will be your new holy grail pick. Lightly scented, adds a sheen to your skin that doesn’t scream “Tinkerbell dumped her bag of sparkles on me”, and hydrates all day, hallelu!

Electronics: HEY ALEXA!

I’ve talked about this product before and I’ll say it again, great as a gift and even greater to have this season for yourself. “Hey Alexa, where’s my stuff?!”, makes tracking your holiday shopping easier than ever and you won’t even have to log onto your computer to find out.

Fashion: Think(x) bigger and BETTER with these two!

Firstly, yes, I’m putting unmentionables on this list of must haves during one of the biggest shopping days of the year, but like c’mon! They’re fashionable and functional and they’re nothing like the unmentionables of our younger years shoved in the back of the drawer. Do it for yourself, your sister, your mother (who may never use them lets be honest), and your bestie. She, and the unmentionables will thank you for it.

and take it with TOPTOTE!

This accessory is a game changer! No longer will you have to stack your hats on your head, smush them in your luggage, or leave them at home because there is now the most convienient way to tote them along! You clip it to your bag or luggage, separate and attach your hat, snap it, and wear it or not!  My friend and inventor of TOPTOTE, Lindsay Albanese, is founder of this genius company where this accessory is just one of many that’ll launch in the near future. Perfect gift for yourself and anyone you know who wears a hat. Anyone! Use my code JESS10 for 10% off your order! <3

Home stuff, gotta have stuff for your home: and yourself … SLIP into something more comfortable why dontcha!

I did say this was for your home, but this is also for you and your face! Sleep, well the way in which we sleep is one of the leading wrinkle causes. Obsessed with sleeping ON your face? Well get yourself a silk pillow and your face and your hair can be saved. You can thank me when we’re 90!

Travel: it’s on the list! Expedia … don’t roll your eyes, that’s the second time in 2 minutes

People don’t usually put travel plans on their wish or shopping lists and I say BOOK THE TRIP! Beginning this Friday at 9am PST, they’re offering 75% off select hotels and more, just go to their website for the codes, download the app and use it to book your next getaway. Don’t forget to pack all the other things you purchased from this list, and I can’t wait to see you all relaxed and rejuvenated!

Well my darlings, I think that about narrows down my top picks during next week’s Cyber Monday madness. I have a blog post and links for my actual “fashion” items for you this weekend, just in time for Monday! I hope this helps you, so help me help others and leave me your top picks for this shopping season! #halppp

And remember, at the end of the day it’s about giving back to others and not running over toes in shopping centers with shopping carts. And pie … it’s really all about the pie.
