For My Misfits – Welcome to One Month Mission!

This past Saturday wrapped up my first ever Reset Camp. I had the honor of being head coach alongside my friend and fitness Jesus Lacey Stone. If you follow me on Instagram you’ve seen me post a bunch about Lacey, The Wall, these Comeback Camps, and my excitement over coaching. So I wanted to take a moment to tell you why you’ve seen this flux in fitness posts and what it means to me to be a coach.

this is not dejavu, this is a separate post on why I love coaching you

Lacey’s camps are so special because it’s more than just a bootcamp, these camps are about so much more than just the workouts. I really do believe that you can get a good workout anywhere, it’s all about how much effort you put into it or if you’re just phoning that session in. I’ve gotten the same results from hot yoga as I have from a bootcamp style workout because I hulk out no matter what I do … granted, I need to learn to chill TF out, but it really comes down to how present you are in that room right?

… we’re resetting our energy, not just refocusing on our goals

During my Reset camp I really tried to convey the message that we were resetting our energy, not just refocusing on our goals. Though it may be easier to remember why you started, I’ve realized that it’s more difficult for us to reset our energy because we’re so used to giving it away to everyone else. Our time together is more about: refill our energy, and then refocus and reset. That’s what we do in these camps. As time goes on and we evolve as people we change, so it’s completely normal that our goals do too. Here are some excerpts from my emails that I sent out to our squad last week and I want you to read them so that if you need to hear it, it’s here. Or maybe you know someone else who needs to hear it. Where ever you’re at and what ever your goal, it’s our mission as a team to help you get there. Here’s a little love letter from me to you about my Reset camp, what we did, and what you can expect during One Month Mission (1MM).

These camps aren’t for the faint of heart, they’re not easy, and there’s nothing soft or gentle about them

As a coach, I’ve observed your courage and how you move with intensity. These camps aren’t for the faint of heart, they’re not easy, and there’s nothing soft or gentle about them. I mean, these workouts have roughed us up and here we are still standing! That’s how we do.

Lacey asked me what my favorite part of camp was and there were SO many memorable moments. And I’ll tell you, RESET was intense. Yesterday alone, you switched sides four times, you went TEN timed rounds, and you pushed more weight on the benches than in the entire camp combined. I left little room for you to catch your breath and onto the next move we went, performing combinations I’d never thrown at you before. Throughout all the madness, you showed no weakness or hesitation in your bodies…even after the 799 sprints. I want you to remember that the next time in life you want to tap TF outyou did all that! Memorable.

These workouts are absolutely designed to make you stronger physically, challenge your stamina, and push you past your limits. But it is more about pushing so hard that you’re forced to tap into the place you pull from when you physically have nothing left to give, that place deep within our bellies where we’re confronted with our inner dialogue. That is when one of two things happens: You either doubt your abilities and let your minds wander, or you do what you did this week and step into your power. That’s true grit.

To paraphrase something from the film Game Changers, “It’s not about how strong you are or how much power you have, it’s what you do with that strength and power.” You sharpened your edges this Reset, you made one another better, and you spread that energy around like peanut buttah. Lacey and I were literally speechless after class and that says a lot about two people who always have something to say.

Something I’ve asked of you is to be willing to give your all, to be coachable, and to trust the process … we’re going to enter that room with purpose and we’ll leave it all on the floor. Get good sleep tonight, because…“There’s just one thing: we never, ever do nothing nice and easy, we always do it nice and rough.” – Tina Turner, Proud Mary. I am so proud of YOU.

that you’ll only find here at #TeamLSF

Those were just some pieces from our team emails that I wrote to our campers that I wanted to share with you because I do believe there is something we do in that room together that you can’t just recreate. Like I said, you can get a good workout anywhere. There are some FAN-FUGGEN-TASTIC trainers/coaches/teachers out there. But to have a team of badass, strong, warrior-women by your side doing it with you and 3 coaches to guide you, support you, and protect you along the way … that you’ll only find here at #TeamLSF. I do hope I get the chance to help coach you this month during 1MM, click here to claim your spot if you’re local to Los Angeles and if you’d like to join us virtually, you can do that HERE! You can’t escape me, I’m all over the VP and so is Kristin so go rep the virtual squad baby! Hop on the forums and say hello! <333

That was a lot of gushing on how special I believe our team to be, but honestly I think anyone would say that about a group of people they have infinite love for. I felt so sad driving away from the studio on our last day, like I truly wanted to write one last email and then spend every day with everyone haha But I hold that squad near to my heart and now on to 1MM we go! So LET’S GO!

Where will I see you? In person for camp and workouts? On the virtual platform??? Let’s just spend every day together!

“Let’s push through the rough stuff and eat the good stuff”- Coach Jess

My desire to help others is bigger than my fear of failing…

I realize this is actually the longest title ever in life, but I couldn’t think of anything more accurate than the statement itself. I said this in a recent video of mine and I meant it.

If you’ve been following along my journey to become a fitness instructor, you know it all began with my fitness journey for myself- but then it morphed into something way outside of myself. Bigger. Corrine had graduated High School, she was going to college and working full time… so umm what other hats did I wear when I took off my mom hat? I put that hat on when I was 15 to be exact.

And I’ve always been active, going through seasons of working out and seasons of not stepping foot inside a gym or studio for months/years. Then I reconnected with a friend of mine, Tiffany Morgan who was working with this fitness goddess, Lacey Stone. In summation- 2 years ago I joined her ‘come back camps’ (bootcamp style workouts + team building), I became obsessed with strength and empowering my teammates, and I realized it was a passion of mine to literally ‘work it out’ alongside others.

Lets eat the good stuff and push through the rough stuff

That’s what my entire brand has been about. Using pain for power, empowering others and giving my energy to the people I care about. Except I didn’t know there was something I could actually do with that, and where would I even start? How intimidating it all sounded, how intimidating the fitness industry was is. So many things could’ve stopped me from pursuing this new career (and almost did). But something was WAY bigger than my fear of failing, way more important to me than my fear of starting something new, of rejection and intimidation.. of training a room full of people ahhh! My desire to help others trumped my fear of failing, my fear of anything really. Oh the fear was still there,

but if you can make your purpose bigger, then you’re unstoppable

So here I am, still shaking (still human) but pushing forward and moving through that uncomfortable feeling. I wanted to share this with you because I learned that if you have something that tugs at you and that you always come back around to, do that thing. I promise you’ll never regret following your passion. Especially when you give of yourself because

that is your legacy

I really like adding in quotations can you tell? lol And I don’t even care how cheesy this is going to sound because I believe it with everything I am- I do believe that as fitness instructors and trainers we work in the service industry. I learned so much going through training and I value the statement that- we hold the space for people to move through whatever they’re going through. We guide and encourage our clients to step into their power, and it’s not about us. And that’s the ONE thing that got me through teaching my very first class this morning. To be a light in someone’s day because

sometimes people are silently struggling

We’ve all been there right? Who doesn’t struggle? But if I can leave my shit at the door, show up for someone else, help them push through the rough stuff, and show them how fuggen strong they really are- honestly that’s why I decided to pivot my career.

I just needed to get that out. And even though you may not be thinking of becoming a leader in fitness, whatever it is that you’re going after, keep going. You’re a leader just by being relentless and getting after it even when it seems too hard- especially when it seems too hard. So I’ll end this public diary entry with some real life images and video from today. A very special day that I’ll never forget. It’s not professional or polished but here it is and I’m so proud of everyone who showed up. Thank you for your energy, your smiles, and your encouragement. Lacey Stone, you already know! Ride or die baby! Mucho respeto <3

So tell me something scary af yet special that you’ve done that you thought was for you but you realized had nothing to do with you and it totes fulfilled you because it was bigger than you

xoxo- Jess

Some Facts About Me

I wanted to share with you some fun facts about me, some things I’ve learned, and some things maybe you didn’t know about me. If any of this sounds familiar let me know in the comments, I love learning about all of you too <3

  1. I’m Chamorro and Irish
  2. Foot stuff bother me, let me explain: stepping into water with socks on. Equally annoying is when my sock slips off my foot deep inside my shoe..ugh Uggs. Or when the bottom of my foot itches … or stepping on a lego (which I haven’t had to do in a while but still) a lot of foot stuff apparently
  3. I play with my food. Move it around with my spoon, nibble chocolate off my candy bars before eating the actual candy bar, flatten See’s lollipops with my teeth..very weird things happen with food and I
  4. I only eat with spoons. Forks are just so annoying, all the food falls off!
  5. I hate salads. I’ll eat them but like, they have to be piled with not good stuff
  6. I was a teen mom. 16 when I had Corriney but somehow we made it out okay
  7. I THINK I want more babies. That’s a really hard one, ask me again tomorrow
  8. I’m a master at the smile mask and my coping skills include shielding, running, and screaming. Sounds like a horror film
  9. I never had animals growing up but I LOOOVE animals. We have two fur babies, Luna and Ace and I can’t live without them
  10. I spend money on skincare over anything else
  11. I live for comfort so 90% of the time I’m in sweats or athleisure attire
  12. Instagram displays only 1% of my actual life and how I feel
  13. Champagne and tequila are my drinks of choice
  14. I love country music
  15. I’m an Army brat, my dad was a Drill Sergeant for 23 years and we moved. A lot
  16. My favorite color is royal blue. And black
  17. I get eyelash extensions every 2 weeks but that’s the only beauty maintenance I have, contrary to people thinking I’ve ever gotten my lips done or face filled, I have not. If I ever do you’ll be the first to know I’m an open book about those things
  18. I got breast augmentation almost 13 years ago. For me, myself, and I. I nursed Corrine at age 16 for 10 months so having saggy boobs at 18 was no fun for me personally. I love them now
  19. I’ve only ever cut 3 people out of my life. 2 exes and a friend. It takes a lot for me to not want to be around you, if I stop talking to you it’s because you’re toxic
  20. I have a lot of friend groups but very few close friends that I see and talk to regularly. It took me a minute to realize that your friend circles are ever changing, seasons change and people change. It’s okay, it’s quality or quantity. It’s not time that we’re limited on, time is infinite. It’s our energy we must protect- who we give it to, what we spend it on, where we place it. Our energy is limited and we have to guard it. I read that somewhere and it really landed on me. If you know where please let me know so I can credit them. I used to give my energy to everyone and all of it. I learned
  21. I’m not a needy friend or partner, but when I need your attention I need it now. I’m not patient just ask Joe
  22. I’m pretty independent but I also feel my best when I’m around others. And I love to make people laugh
  23. I live for helping others, I can be captain save-a-ho at times so I’ve had to learn when someone just needs a lil boosting and when someone has to save themselves, but I love being a good friend and I really try to be
  24. Fitness has become such a wonderful part of my daily life that I look forward to empowering other women because they’re all so damn strong inside and out
  25. I love to cook but I really LOVE to bake
  26. I did a lot of drugs when I was younger and I’m happy that I can be open and honest about those things when Corrine comes to me with questions
  27. When I was younger we had a pet pig named Pepper, he ran away and bit a horse and was never heard from again
  28. I’m a control freak and I’m working on that, remember that whole energy thing? Well I try not to give my energy away to things out of my control
  29. I’m boarder line hoarder status over here with all these clothes and makeup products. I need Marie Kondo
  30. Joe is the love of my life. He’s also working beside me and I want to squeeze his face but I’ll let him work
  31. I’m most proud to be Corrine’s mom. She and I have really been through some shit together and she’s grown into the most grounded, genuine, loving, and most wonderful young lady and I’m beyond honored to be her mama
  32. She and I have definitely slept in our car before. Ah yes, those days sucked
  33. I fed Corrine fast food (what’s up dollar menu) for almost a year because it was all I could afford one year when she was little and I ran from a repo company for almost a year during that time too. Talk about stressful
  34. I’ve learned that abusive relationships don’t start abusive. At least it didn’t for me, it started with a shove and some name calling. I’d like to talk about that more with you some day
  35. I’ve experienced that being a parent requires you to be selfless and when put in certain circumstances you’ll ensure their happiness and safety above your own and that will drive you. My love for Corrine has made me the most powerful tool when it comes to making sure she’s safe and happy
  36. No one is perfect, doesn’t that just sound boring?
  37. I’m still learning every day and damn I need to read more

That’s all I’ve got for now, thank you for following along in all that, it felt therapeutic! I enjoy sharing with you but I also really love learning about each of you so tell me some fun facts about yourself or some lessons you’ve learned <3

GO TEAM USA – CONNECTING OUR COMMUNITY!

It was such an inspiring experience in Venice Beach this weekend as I joined AT&T on the final stop of the Road to Rio tour! We celebrate and send off the US Olympic and Paralympic Team that AT&T has been a sponsor of for 30 years, and I got to connect with the #ATT-Fanmate community. I even tried my hand at a few activities that were on site simulating some of the Olympic sports!

The events were free and open to the public, held outside of the Venice Beach Recreation Center and it couldn’t have been a more perfectly beautiful summer day! The crowd really turned out as we all enjoyed the AT&T Road to Rio Trailers that were set up around the AT&T Main Stage. From a virtual reality experience in an Olympians point of view, to zip lining, and fun green screen photo activities, it was a fun and engaging afternoon.

We also got the opportunity to meet some Team USA athletes and enjoy live performances on the AT&T Main Stage by Hailee Steinfeld, Heffron Drive, Rachel Platten and others! Look at that view! I got to enjoy the excitement from the best seat in the house!

The best part of the day was sharing a special message to Team USA. I told them that we’re all so proud of them and that they’re already winners to us! I can’t imagine the dedication and perseverance it takes to become an Olympian! This weekend was all about connecting our community and having fun while communicating appreciation for the games and everything surrounding the Olympics and Paralympics.

What My Brand Says About Me

As online personalities, we are often asked to define what our brands represent and to describe what we do in a singular sentence. In a singular sentence, I’m a lot of things. I’m an adrenaline junkie, a foodie, a mom, a puppy lover – a lot of things. I can best describe my brand as I describe what it is that I hope to give people in the community of ‘Team Jess’, to – Inspire. Encourage. Empower.

I find inspiration in the places I visit, encouragement in my friends, and empowerment in the stories I write. It’s really refreshing when I can go places and cover stories, when I can team up with brands, and when I can get an insider look at all the things that really interest me, to then write about and share with all of you. I’ve been sharing a lot this week on the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am event that was held last week in Pebble Beach and the Foursome who shared their Fan’s Eye View of the tournament this year.

As I introduced the Foursome to you last week, I told you how I relate to each of them; being that I’m a mother of a 17 year old, an Army brat who’s moved every 3 years, and someone who also quit corporate America to pursue the dream of being creative full time. Learning about each of their stories individually helped me understand what about golf each of them loved so much. Last week I got to chat with them and these are their responses that really stuck with me.

I asked Dan what the one thing was that he’ll take away with him from this experience. He told me that the opportunity better helped him understand where he needs to be in order to reach his goal saying, “I can see that picture and I can imagine it and then I can go home and visualize it …. I know now what I need to do and where I need to be … turn the small goals into the big goal”.  As a visualizer myself, I was silently ‘wahoo-ing’ everything he was saying while taking notes.

I’d asked Tiffany the same question and if she had any advice for someone like me, who was interested in the sport but perhaps a bit intimidated by it, and for someone wanting to give up. She said, “It’s kind of like life, every day is not a great day. It’s not. And you just move on…. like anything else it takes patience, focus, commitment, you’ll be rewarded for those 3 things”. Again I was silently standing up giving her a slow clap because it couldn’t have been said any better. Patience. Focus. Commitment. Check! Check! Check!

Katie, the youngest in the group, was so poised and well spoken that you knew by talking with her that she held her own on the golf course and in life. She was also motivated by this special fan’s eye view of the event, having answered my question about what her new goals for the year were, saying, “My goal is to become a professional … this experience has motivated me go out there, give it my best and practice, and work my hardest to get to where I need to be in the future”. She’s a smart young lady and I’m so excited to see where the next 5 years takes her.

Before I let the Foursome get back to their activities, I spoke to Tim whose story really hit home for me since my dad was in the military for 23 years and I knew exactly where he was coming from. I asked Tim what about golf made the rehabilitation process for him something to look forward to, what about it changed him. He responded, “I’m the type of guy that if I do something I’m gonna do it and I’m gonna do it all out….to prove that I’m not broken. I might be scarred … I might look different and walk different, and have to live different, but I’m still me and I’m still able to do anything I wish to”.

I didn’t know what to say after that, I was pretty speechless, there were some pretty powerful statements made from these four and I’m so glad I got a chance to chat with them and get an insider view of their insider experience.

I’m inspired by each of their incredible stories, and I find it fascinating that I can relate to each of them as their brands sound a lot like mine! They each inspire, encourage, and empower and it’s wonderful to see that in this recap video reel of their “Fan’s Eye View” campaign and their week at the event here:

You can catch up on all of their behind-the-scenes photos and videos by following them on Twitter: @blackgirlsgolf @kthorsford @timlanggolf @thedanplan. Follow along in their journeys with me!

I hope you’ve had an amazing week and I can’t wait to catch you up on what happened this week!

Hugs,

Jess

New year, new beginnings, new goals. We’re all setting them so lets share what our goals are and any updates….. accountability is everything! So here are some goals of mine for this year and you can crack the whip on me if I slack up on one of them:

  • 3 blog posts a week (alternating 6 of my most passionate topics)
  • stick to it (anything and everything and this includes being active)
  • family time (and me time, this is necessary and I should do more of this)
  • a video a week on my YouTube channel and Beauty channel
  • read more (20 minutes before bed each night)
  • give time to my friends (dedicate time each week to empower another friend of mine)
So share with me what your goals are this year, if you have a blog, the name of it so I can check in with you, and where you draw the most inspiration. I’m inspired by different things every day and today it was my daughter coming home from school and asking me to paint with her. She inspires me to be creative.
