2020 Gift Guides Start Here – Self Care

Cancel your plans, I’ve got you!

Today marks the ‘almost’ end of this month and an ‘almost’ close to this wild year that has been 2020. Thanksgiving was yesterday, I hope you enjoyed your holiday however you spent it and I want to wish you a very happy National Native American Heritage Day.

So while people are sifting through online sales and email alerts for even more sales, I guess it’s time I begin sharing my gift guides for this holiday season. So cancel your plans (tbh did we really have any), I’ve got you!

This year I wanted to focus on shopping small and supporting local and I’d love for you to help me do that. Our friends who have small owned restaurants and businesses need us more now than ever and I’m so happy to share with you my close friends and brands that I love. You’ll see me highlight these kinds of offerings over the next few weeks leading into the new year.

a big part of self care is checking in with our mental health

As I speak to my personal experience with each of these brands you’ll notice that I take pause for myself because mental health is everything. Health is wealth and in my opinion mental health is equally as important as your heart and physical health.

A gift for yourself, a gift for a friend or a loved one (ahem this is perfect for moms, sisters, SIL, daughters, dad, brothers, all of ’em!), you just can’t go wrong gifting wellness.

Their ingredients are all organic, plant based, and their USDA certified organic seaweed (which is present in almost all of their formulations) is sourced directly from a family-operated cooperative on the shores of Patagonia. And today you get a FREE FULL SIZED (yes I’m screaming) Hyaluronic Sea Serum with all purchases of $135+
  • Trestique – female founded, Trestique knows how to make you look and feel your best! Their motto encompasses the “simple beauty routine” and sustainability has been woven into their product line. Goals! They’re a cruelty-free brand featuring creamy formulas and high performance built-in tools, so you get luxury products at a reasonable price. My favorite thing to do is to keep these babies in the refrigerator and to pop them on in the morning while I get ready. It takes my eyes from kinda wonky to totally wide eyed. So like, self care but make it fashunnnn <3
  • Mason Grey LA – I LIVE in this robe! I mean, Lacey probably wonders if I ever get around to washing it because I wear it so often, but who is really putting on pants these days? And it is the coziest, most chicest robe evaaaaar

This is one of my favorite things to do- share with you products I love, companies I support, and highlight the small businesses that could really use our business as we close out this year. Let’s support one another, let’s grant ourselves grace, and let’s find time for self care. This holiday season I hope you too find time to be still, take care of yourself, and give yourself the gift of wellness.

Best Healthy Pumpkin Spiced Latte Recipe

I’m so basic when it comes to pumpkin spiced .. everything! What does basic even mean by the way? That I love Uggs and cozy sweaters that look like blankets, Christmas music in October, and all things pumpkin spiced? Okay fine, it’s me!

This recipe however, unlike the original that I’ll refer to (which btw I’m actually obsessed with- it’s a problem) may be basic but it’s way healthier than it’s original. The Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew that I’d love to have on the daily has 250 calories and 31 grams of sugar. And listen, I’m not one to not enjoy something just because of its calorie count. I will actually always have this extra layer of “life” on my body which I’m absolutely happy with, just so that I’m able to enjoy the things I love i.e. tequila, pizza, fluffy hot cheetos, and the PCCB  from good ol’ Starbies.

However, if I consume it as much as I’d like, I mine as well say buh-bye to the balanced lifestyle I lead because it’s just too sugary for me to have more than once a week. So while this recipe is DELICIOUS, just know that it’s not as sweet (ahem 31 grams), and won’t be made by your favorite barista. Here tis:

say hello to your new pumpkin spiced latte bff:
  • 1 cup cold brew (I grind my beans fresh, brew fresh and then refrigerate until I need it. Usually by the am)
  • 1 cup almond milk (I’ve used coconut milk, hemp milk, and oat milk for the recipe, all are dank)
  • 2 TBS pumpkin purée
  • 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice (1/8 tsp if it kicks you in the throat & exclude all together if you’re not into spice)
  • 1 1/2 TBS maple syrup (more or less depending on how sweet you like your suga… coffee) and also there are other sweeteners like stevia, xyliol, raw honey etc!

*blend in blender, hello froth, hi get in my belly. This recipe yields two servings, half if necessary and enjoy <3

Are you a pumpkin spice kind of person? I see pumpkin spiced everythingggg out right now and I’m very very into it. Cookies, cakes, beverages, candles, all of it.

Hit me with those holiday recipes baby, you know it’s fast approaching! <3

Chocolate Raspberry Chia Seed Pudding

Chia seeds, they’re in everything! Skin care, desserts, and yummy breakfast items so I thought today I’d share with you my easy and delicious home made chia seed pudding! And if you know me than you KNOW of course I added in chocolate 😉

Chia seeds are extremely rich in antioxidants and minerals, they’re a great source of essential fatty acids, aaaand I do love it as a bit of crunch in my shakes. This recipe is my recent go-to for breakfast on the road and it’s the perfect post-workout treat!

Big pros: low in sugar, gluten free, dairy free, and vegan! Say wuuut! I also decided to toss in cocoa powder and raspberries to curb my sugar cravings, and makes it extra satiating. You can also add in sliced almonds or toasted walnuts… goin’ for that crunch factor again. And any time I can add chocolate, I will!

Method:

– 4 TBSP Chia seeds (I like the texture so more chia seeds doesn’t bother me)
– 1 1/2 cup unsweetened almond or coconut milk (have you tried the almond coconut milk combo?!)
– rasberries
– 2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
– dash of cinnamon
– and if you like your pudding sweet you can use some stevia or honey but I omitted it for this recipe
– toasted walnuts, sliced almonds, or whatever nut you prefer…crunchy!

Combine the chia seeds with the almond milk, raspberries, cocoa powder, nuts, and cinnamon in a glass jar with a lid. Give it a good shake to combine the ingredients well and let it sit in the refrigerator over night. Tadaaa, enjoy!

This recipe made about two really big servings which is perfect for meal prepping. It’s filling, super healthy, and so simple to make. Try it out, let me know what you think, and TAG me with your creations!

Chia seed pudding… make it? Order it? Like it? Leave it?

A love letter to my body

What I need right now is a moment to be soft to myself, an act of self-preservation and self-care. What I need right now is to write a lil love letter to myself.

Dear body,

Have I told you lately that I love you? I’m actually singing this to you in my best Rod Stewart voice because I know it took almost my entire adult life to finally tell you that I love you back.

and i said to my body. softly. ‘i want to be your friend.’ it took a long breath. and replied ‘i have been waiting my whole life for this. ― Nayyirah Waheed

I actually read this quote on Instagram and started crying and Corrine looked at me like I’d fallen off my rocker. I don’t know why it took me so long to be kinder to you. Actually, yes I do.

———–

I lived my teen years in the 90’s (sup 80’s babies) and we had Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford and others all over the media and they were all VERY beautiful… and VERY thin. I remember going to a modeling school in San Francisco when I was fourteen and we were told 1) that must we shave our legs from our ankles to our hips and 2) we were ‘supposed’ to have three triangles on our legs if we wanted to pursue anything other than print work.

A triangle to shape your thighs, a triangle to shape your knees, and a triangle to shape your calves. We all know what a triangle looks like so it seemed very odd to tell young adolescents that any part of their body look like a geometric shape. Even our heads aren’t perfectly circular! And by the way, a triangle seems inaccurate, did they mean an upside down triangle? Even so, I can’t compute. And while we’re here, I’m 4’10 and a half which means I was not pursuing anything other than print work anyway.

I want to also note that the desired waist measurement during my time at that school was 23 inches. TWENTY THREE. Ummm wuuut?! One, I haven’t had a thigh gap since I was four years old so there goes the triangle equation and two, the only 23 I can comprehend as being personally relatable to me is- that one time in life when I was 23 years old. Oh and this year on November 3rd, my daughter will turn 23. P.S. this is not me shaming those who have 23 inch waists, this is me saying you should never tell an insecure person (esp an insecure young person) that they must be a certain size to qualify.

So dear body of mine, I do understand why I wasn’t so nice to you. You were trying to protect me by holding onto vital fat so that I could grow, carry life, support my organs, and be healthy. It’s not your fault that I didn’t see girls with my body type represented on television until Jennifer Lopez on, In Living Color as a “Fly Girl”. P.S. do you remember that show? Helllloooo I’ve been trying to build a booty ever since. I know voluptuous and strong women were represented before 1990 but that’s the first time I can remember seeing a body that I related to.

The thing is, I’m Islander and that means I’m genetically engineered to climb coconut trees, run from brown tree snakes in Saipan (I hail from this island and you should Google the snake part, it’s gnarly), hula dance for hours, and build a bajillion island babies.. oh and the huts for them too. There is and always will be very soft yet strong (and some not so strong tbh) bits on my body. My arms and my legs have been described by ‘societal beauty standards’ to be “thick”. Who came up with that by the way. I mean, I’ll take it- thick is sturdy, thick is something to hold onto, and thick is reliable… if I take my phone into the bathroom with me and then I accidentally drop my phone… bet your ass my thick thighs will save the day. So I’ll try this again.

———–

Dear body, I love you. I will tell you and show you more often how much I appreciate you. I am curvy, I am strong, I am fast, I am sturdy, I have stamina, and I have stretch marks. I love my body. All of it. Don’t even get me started on all the other things I love about myself. I’d actually love to write another love letter to the rest of my self. Like my brain.. whew she’s so big and brainy!

Please tell me something about yourself that you love. If you haven’t heard it lately, you are okay and everything will be okay <333

How to Have the Perfect Pamper Night

Self-care is something that I make a point to do every single day, and I am very open about how much of a self-care advocate I am. I love skincare, relaxing, and simply taking some time for me. Taking it a step further and setting an entire night aside to dedicate to pampering yourself will help you feel rejuvenated and relaxed.

Here are some ideas of what you can do to have the perfect pamper night and enjoy some ‘me time’.

Draw a relaxing bath

Start by setting up your bathroom for a relaxing bath. Do a deep clean, set out fresh towels, and set your space however you like it. Then draw your bath and add in your favorite combination of essential oils, Epsom salt, flower petals and a bath bomb. A bath is a great way to release tension in your body and help calm the mind as you relax. Plus, there is something about a bath over a shower that screams pamper night.

Apply a facemask

I love a good facemask. After removing makeup and a gentle cleanse, apply a facemask to target a specific skin concern and indulge in a little extra skin treatment while you take your bath and let it soak in. Natural and gentle products like those from the skin care line of Blue Lagoon feel luxurious and will treat your skin without stripping it.

Light a candle

A gorgeous smelling candle adds to the ambiance of your pamper night and can help you to relax. With its soft lighting, you can turn off direct lights and further ease into that state of calm.

Pour yourself some champagne

A glass of champagne is so often saved for celebration, and a night of pampering is cause for celebration! Treat yourself and pour yourself some champagne, sipping while you continue with your self-care night.

Indulge in something sweet to eat

Those sweet treats you wait to have so you can savor every bite? Bring those out for this! Indulge in something sweet.

Get lost in a good movie or book

Sometimes it’s a good book, sometimes it’s a great movie. Select a book or movie before you start your pampering night so you don’t have to waste any precious time choosing what to watch! Then sit back, relax, sip on that champagne, enjoy your sweet treat, and get lost in a good movie.
These are just a few ideas of what you can do for the perfect pamper night. A couple other ideas are to do your nails, do a body treatment, and use a lavender pillow spray to promote good sleep. Your perfect pamper night and “me time” can look like whatever you want it to, focusing on things that make you relax and feel good.

Flower Pot Fridays – Healers Highlighted

I’ve had the pleasure of creating a series for you that is near and dear to my heart. During these times when things feel uncertain, where worry and fear can creep in, I know it’s now that we need to share with one another what keeps our spirits high and our anxieties low. Over the past month I’ve developed an IGTV Series all about self care with one of my favorite companies, The Flower Pot. Female founded and operated by my close friend Rebecca, I’ve highlighted some Flower Pot products that I use every day and shared with you how to implement them into your routines. I hope you love it and I hope you enjoy this peek into my mind from a feature I did with them.

If you were stuck on a desert island, what medicinal plant would you hope to find while scavenging?

Echinacea to keep me healthy forever, garlic on everything forever, cannabis flower to keep me creative and calm forever, and mushrooms to free my mind… forever *said in my best Friday voice to Craig

Everyone has a folk healer in the family—the grandma with the onion chest rub, the uncle with the hot toddies. Have you picked up any healing traditions from your bloodline?

My mom was born and raised in Saipan and an old wive’s tale is that Vicks and coconut oil are two of the world’s greatest healers. I mean, she’d rub Vicks vapor rub on my entire body… imagine that. To the bottom of my feet, my chest, my elbows, my back, and I’m not sure why. But she would also alternate this method with pure coconut oil. She’d warm the oil up between her palms (with fire!) and then place the warmed up oil on my tummy for stomach aches, or the back of my neck for headaches etc. It worked, I don’t know how but it worked. I now try to slather Vicks and coconut oil onto everyone I love.

The digital life is a vibe killer in large doses. What do you do to disconnect?

My nightly ritual includes edibles, I’m a big fan of THC/CBD hybrids. Relaxes my body, calms my mind, reduces inflammation, relieves anxiety, and helps me get back into my body after a day of connecting to the world.

What first step do you recommend to newbies who are just starting out on their wellness journeys?

It’s so easy to be deterred from doing what is best for your body because of other’s opinions. There’s a lot of wellness products on the market that are frowned upon simply because they were taboo 10 years ago. I say do the research, read all the things, be open to trying new things and really listen to your body. Your body will respond and tell you exactly what you need and what you don’t need.

Healing is all about community, and finding the people you trust. Who are your go-to gurus?

Oprah for all-around life wellness (I mean, it’s Oprah), Yung Pueblo for my mental wellness, Lacey Stone and her entire team/tribe for my body and heart wellness, and all things Coelho for spirit wellness.

Out of all the lessons you’ve learned, what’s the number one piece of business advice you would give anyone starting out?

Be consistent, be persistent. No one will ever be as passionate about working towards your dreams as you will be, so really go for it. Whatever it is that you can’t stop thinking about, do it, don’t wait. There’s never a perfect time so don’t negotiate with yourself, you say now and you GO!

What’s you favorite TFP product? How does it heal you or enhance your life?

How much time do you have 😉 I really love the Sleep Mints and Hemp-infused Apple Cider Vinegar because they’re two things I do on the daily that’s so easy to implement into my routine. Morning time and night time.

We think about everything in terms of plants. What’s your spirit flower?

I’m forever drawn to the Jasmine flower. I appreciate their beauty, sweet scent, and medicinal uses.

Music as medicine, what’s your current or forever go-to album?

My go-to’s because it depends on my mood and what the occasion calls for: Phosphorescent, Frank Sinatra, 80’s love songs, and 90’s hip hop

*DEALERS* CHOICE: Are there any projects you’re working on, fun factoids about you or PSAs you’d like to share with our community?

Two things I’ll put out into the universe- creating my own skincare/fragrance line and designing an athleisure line. Saying it out loud makes it real, try it! I hope you’ve enjoyed this lil peek into my routine, my faves, and my life. Please reach out to me if you have any health/wellness needs, I got you!

With the current pandemic, it will be a long time before we can go back to traveling internationally. This is a great opportunity to concentrate on our country, as there is so much to see here in the United States.

Here are 10 beautiful cities to visit in the U.S.:

1. Chicago

Chicago has a steadily growing population and is one of the future megacities of the world, expected to become one by 2030.  It is the third most populous city in the United States, but with its location on Lake Michigan it has a mix of city and also gorgeous nature views. A famous site to see here is “The Bean” located at Millennium Park.

2. Philadelphia

Philadelphia is the largest city of Pennsylvania that makes it on many people’s East Coast travel itineraries. Most notably, it is home to a standout UNESCO World Heritage Site, Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence was signed that is worth a visit.

3. Portland

Portland, Maine is a popular destination for summer and autumn, as it gives that New England vibe with an extra hint of quirky elegance.

4. Boston

Boston is a characteristic city that has a split ‘old world’ and ‘new world’ feel to it. It is often referred to as the city with two souls, historic and modern, as well as being the ‘Athens of America’. You can walk the Freedom Trail here, as well as visit numerous museums, the Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera, the Symphony Orchestra and more.

5. San Francisco

San Francisco is a city full of character. Often referred to as a hippie town, San Francisco is the hilly city located right on the Bay of San Francisco with a lot to see, do and experience. You can visit the beaches, head to museums, explore Golden Gate Park, see a show at the Fillmore, and explore the side streets with so much character.

8. Honolulu

Honolulu, Hawaii is a gorgeous beach town on a volcanic island with a ton of culture, making it an absolute must see. The food scene here is booming, the sunsets are incredible, and the city continues to draw visitors consistently every year. A trip here makes it seem like you are traveling to another country and is a destination to check off the bucket list for everyone living in the United States.

9. Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City, Utah is a city to visit if you love dining, nightlife, performing arts, and especially winter sports. Popular ski resorts near the city are Brighton, Snowbird, Alta and Solitude, which could make for the perfect winter holiday this year.

Divorce sucks.

I want out

I believe it takes a lot of courage to say to your partner that things aren’t working out in a marriage and that they’re actually irreconcilable. It takes a lot of courage and sometimes a lot of therapy to say, “I want out”, and to actually follow through with it. No one will ever know just how badly divorce sucks unless they’ve been through it themselves.

Everyone loses in a divorce scenario because life isn’t always like it is in the movies with its happily ever afters. In this scenario everyone gets hurt. It’s one of the hardest, most saddest, and scariest decisions to make. You lose your partner, you lose their family (holy shit this hurt big), you lose friends, you lose a home… everyone loses. So why choose divorce then? I choose happiness that’s why. So who’s to blame then? We both are. Oh how complicated it all is, I know. Does everyone agree and support this decision? No. Should we have stayed together and fought harder? No, but damn, we tried. People will say we didn’t try hard enough and those people weren’t in our marriage.

This is my second divorce and I said to someone, “I just can’t get love right”. I mean, are my expectations too high? Are they too low? How could two people love each other so much that they choose to get married and vow to be together forever, no matter what. And then those same two people allow so much space to build between them and those words- that there’s a permanent breakdown of their marriage. I don’t have the answer to that. Love feels easy but just like the interworking of any relationship, it’s not. The only way I can explain it is that just how we fell in love is just how we fell out of it. Slowly and then all at once.

“Love is verb”- have you heard this before? We hear people say they’ve found their ‘person’, the one. How do you know when you’ve found them? I think that when you’re 98 and you look over at the person you’ve spent an entire lifetime with and you still choose each other every day, well you’ve found your person. Until then, it’s a daily decision you must make to fight to keep what you have. We can’t get stuck, we can’t get too comfortable, and routine is the enemy. Love takes work, that’s the verb part, it’s the doing.

If you don’t like them than how can you love them?

Look, I don’t know a lot of things but what I’ve learned is that love requires communication and compromise. It’s being selfless and asking questions, it’s not taking the other for granted. It’s not letting hurt or resentment build up by speaking out before shit goes sideways. Love is so many things and I do believe there is a difference between loving someone and being in-love with them. If you don’t like them than how can you love them? Love is a constant and forever kind of thing, as in I will forever love all of my exes. There will be a tender spot that I will always hold for each of them. I think it’s the being in-love bit that we run the risk of falling in and out of. It’s the part that keeps us on our toes, it’s the big work part, it’s the doing.

Integrity is everything and there’s nothing integral about lying to someone for the sake of keeping a promise.

It’s our responsibility to ourselves and to our partners to be honest about how we feel and where we are. So many questions run through your mind when you’re packing your things into boxes. Where did the love go and why can’t we get it back? Did we do everything possible to save what we had and will we have regrets? Integrity is everything and there’s nothing integral about lying to someone for the sake of keeping a promise. The truth is always better than a lie and should never be compromised because of fear. I will never stay in a relationship with someone out of convenience or comfort. I will never lie to someone I love and tell them I’m in love with them when I’m not, or that we’re only bent when we’re actually broken. Too often we’re so afraid of being uncomfortable that we stay in relationships and situations out of convenience. Too often we hurt the person we’re with because we’re too afraid to share with them our truths, so then we become a lie. Where’s the integrity in that?

Psst.. you… I really want to say this to you… if you’re questioning your relationship or if my story landed on you in such a way, if you’re hurting, or if you feel alone or lost or confused: Only YOU know your marriage. Only you know what happens when we close the doors and don’t allow the rest of the world in. You have all the answers you’re looking for and you don’t need me or anyone else to tell you how to feel or what to do. But if I may, I’ll say this- if there’s a fighting chance, take it. If you can save what you have or fall back in love, take it. If there is any hope left at all, if there is any fight left in either one of you… take it. There’s courage in that too. Go for it no matter what. Whatever your decision is, to walk away or to step it up, go for it.

I’m sharing this with you because no one gets to tell our story but us. I hope you hear me and I hope maybe some of it helps you. It’s actually no one’s business what happens in your life and we worry too much about what people think. Who gets to live your life but you? I know I’ve asked you a lot of questions in this post but it’s because they’re things we have to ask ourselves and sometimes they’re conversations we aren’t having.

I chose to finally talk about it because happiness and love… both of which everyone wants and we all deserve. Love is so many things. I refuse to believe that our marriage was a failure. We really went for it. Joe and I will forever have love and respect for one another and we continue to be kind to each other. That to me is a success.

Tips and Ideas for Being More Active in the House

In light of coronavirus, millions of people across the world are working from home. While working from home may have countless benefits, it also poses some challenges. While working from home, you perform most of the tasks while sitting in one spot either from your laptop or smartphone. Staying in one place for extended periods can lead to a sedentary and unhealthy lifestyle.

So, to ensure that you stay active while indoors, here are some essential tips to help you stay fit.

Take a Walk Daily

Make it a part of your routine and a necessity to walk for at least fifteen minutes daily. Just walk around your neighborhood, either before you start working or after work. Walking enhances the pumping of blood and also boosts metabolism. Experts also say that regular walks boost your moods and help in weight management.

Use a Fitness Application to Exercise

Just like other endeavors, keeping track of your fitness program when having to stay indoors all the time can be difficult. But today there are so many options online hat will help you stay on track. On the app store there are many fitness apps to choose from, one of them being the 30 Day Fitness Challenge that has a variety of different workouts you can do, like this slim waist workout at home for example. A combination of working out regularly and healthy eating, will help you stay on top of your fitness game.

Involve Yourself in Cleaning Activities

Cleaning your house is a win-win situation. Going up and downstairs, lifting laundry, and being on the feet from time to time is a good way of exercising. Also, having a clean house improves your mental health too.

Use Household Tools as Weights

You can improvise the household items if you’re used to going to the gym regularly. For example, you can use a pack of rice as weights or even water bottles. Besides, you can run up and down the stairs for a couple of times, and try to make the run as much intensity as possible. This will get you sweating in a matter of minutes.

Dance

Put on some music and make your living room a dance hall. Dancing is a good way of keeping yourself active while indoors, as well a great mood-improving activity. Dance is proven to be a useful type of workout that burns as many excess calories as bike riding, walking, or even swimming. But the intensity of dance, the effort you integrate, and length of the dance determines the calories you burn.

Walk around during Calls

If you are not on a call that needs you to use a webcam or laptop, consider standing and strolling around while on the call. This is undoubtedly an incredible way of performing some stretches and getting some extra steps in.

Include Online Yoga Classes

Yoga isn’t only essential for your overall physical health; it is also a fantastic way of boosting your general wellness. The reason for this is that yoga lowers stress and improves your emotional health and sleep patterns. Besides, it reduces neck pain, low-back pain, and manages depressive and anxiety symptoms.
